CBD Extraction – The Making of CBD Oil

Many people use and love CBD oil for its potential healing properties. But have you ever stopped to think about how manufacturers produce CBD oil? Of course, it’s not obscure knowledge that CBD oil comes from the hemp plant. However, even those who consider themselves CBD fanatics often know little about the process of CBD extraction.

So, how does CBD extraction harness the hemp plant to create a concentrated, refined oil? There are currently a few different methods that hemp experts utilize to extract CBD oil. Keep reading to learn about the different extraction methods, and the many CBD products that come from them.

Ethanol Extraction

Ethanol extraction is perhaps the most well-known and accessible method of CBD extraction. This approach utilizes ethanol alcohol to strip the hemp plant of oil. It starts by soaking harvested hemp in a container of ethanol. This draws out all the oils of the plant, which include CBD, along with other cannabinoids.

Because ethanol extraction extracts an array of cannabinoids, this method works best for producing oil intended for “full-spectrum” hemp products. Full spectrum hemp oil provides the benefits of CBD along with the therapeutic facilitation of other cannabinoids. This can promote absorption and overall effectiveness when consumed.

Ethanol extraction is efficient and straightforward. It is a fairly simple method that requires minimal equipment, making it a first choice for many CBD producers. The FDA also marks this process as safe.

Water Extraction

Water extraction also involves a fairly simple method of CBD extraction in terms of equipment. This newly emerging process utilizes water vapor, ice, or water. This component is then combined with finely chopped trimmings from the hemp plant. Next, someone strains the mixture through a cloth or mesh fabric material. Producers repeat this process a few times, straining the water away from the plant waste and creating a clear solution of water and CBD oil. Once the oil extract settles, someone can easily drain off the water, resulting in a concentrated final product of high-CBD content hemp oil.

Because water extraction requires only simple materials and no machinery, it is an affordable and convenient method of extracting CBD oil. However, the major drawback is that it can become rather time consuming, making it less optimal for commercial use.

CO2 Extraction

CO2 extraction makes for a more technical and precise way of extracting CBD and other cannabinoids from hemp. Currently the most widely used method of extraction, commercial production favors the CO2 process. In addition to producing consumable hemp products, scientists often use CO2 extraction to isolate and analyze specific cannabinoids for research purposes.

The process is quick, using pressurized carbon dioxide to separate targeted molecules form the hemp plant. This means that a CO2 extraction device can specifically extract CBD, or other cannabinoids, in isolated batches.

The efficiency and specificity of CO2 extraction makes it an optimal approach to sourcing CBD oil for CBD products. However, the specialized equipment required can be pricey.

From CBD Extraction to Fine CBD Products

Once scientists or manufacturers extract CBD oil using any of the above techniques, the next step is to create easy-to-use and effective CBD products. A final product might be as simple as a refined and enhanced CBD oil for oral consumption. Or, CBD oil might be used as the key ingredient in food edibles, pills, or topical solutions.

Usually, manufacturers mix concentrated CBD oil with a carrier oil when it is turned into refined product. For oral CBD drops and tinctures, Silver Rain uses MCT coconut oil to boost absorption and create effective and fast-acting oils. We also include various natural botanical extracts to enhance the flavor and therapeutic effects of our CBD oil.
