Different Formats of Taking CBD

As you may have already gathered, there are many different types of products containing CBD. In Chapter 1 we briefly mentioned a few common formats of taking CBD, including oral tinctures and topical applications.

With a diversity of CBD products and a multitude of reasons for taking CBD, you might be wondering which type is best for you. The answer depends on your personal preferences, motivation for trying CBD, and health goals.

Types of CBD Products

Logically, some ways of ingesting CBD are more effective than others, and certain products are better suited for treating certain conditions.

Some of the most common formats of taking CBD include:

  • Oral tinctures
  • Foods & Beverages
  • Topical oils, sprays, lotions, etc.
  • Beauty products
  • Smokable Bud

CBD Oil and Extraction From Hemp

The basis of any CBD product starts with oil. In order to utilize CBD for any purposes, the compound must be extracted from the hemp plant first. The result of CBD extraction from hemp is a “CBD concentrate” in the form of oil.

Ethanol Extraction – Currently, there are a few different methods of extracting CBD oil. The first, and most common uses ethanol to strip oil from the hemp plant. Soaking hemp plants in this simple alcohol draws out not just CBD oil, but other cannabinoids as well. This is an especially useful factor for developing “full-spectrum hemp” products. Ethanol extraction is a preferred method for many CBD producers as it is a simple and efficient process that is also regarded as safe by the FDA.

CO2 Extraction – Another increasingly popular method of extraction uses CO2. With CO2 extraction, a pressurized device targets specific molecules that CO2 separates from the hemp plant. This method takes only a short amount of time to complete, and its quick turn around along with its ability to hone in on specific cannabinoids makes it useful. Scientists also use CO2 extraction as a way to retrieve cannabinoids for research purposes.

Water Extraction – Water extraction is a newly emerging method of CBD extraction. It involves mixing either water, water vapor, or ice, with finely chopped hemp plant parts. This mixture is then strained, with the CBD oil and water being strained away from the plant waste. Then, it is easy to drain away the water. The simplicity and affordability of water extraction makes is a convenient method. However, the process can be quite time consuming.

After any method of extraction, CBD oil can be turned into a diversity of products for oral or topical use. Keep reading for a breakdown of the pros and cons of different CBD products.

Tinctures

Perhaps the most prevalent type of CBD product, oral tinctures are straightforward and effective. Tinctures typically consist of CBD concentrate oil, and other ingestible oils that facilitate absorption and dilute the concentration to the desired dosage. CBD tinctures can be taken sublingually (under the tongue) or swallowed, and a dose usually consists of just a few drops.

Tinctures are often thought of as the most “efficient” way of taking CBD because they are concentrated, work quickly, and a little goes a long way. If you take CBD daily, CBD drops might be a good option.

Foods and Drinks

You may also be familiar with some more tasty forms of ingestible CBD. Many CBD brands make foods and beverages infused with CBD. This might include gummies, baked goods, sodas, or even CBD infused water.

CBD edibles are often a delicious and fun way or enjoying the benefits of CBD. However, they might not be as efficient compared to oral tinctures in a few ways. Pricing wise, some CBD edibles contain less CBD than a concentrated oil tincture, so the product won’t last as long. The dosing might also be less precise, so it might be more difficult to feel potent effects with some CBD edibles.

Overall, CBD edibles are usually enjoyable and delicious, and they may be a good option if you dislike the taste or texture of CBD oil.

Topicals (Oils, Sprays, Lotions, etc.)

Instead of ingesting edible products or tinctures, another way to utilize CBD is to administer it topically. There are a multitude of CBD products on the market in the form of oils, sprays, lotions, creams, and more. Topical CBD products are typically focused on addressing pain-related issues such as sore muscles or joints.

One benefit of using topical CBD products for pain relief is that this method allows you to directly apply CBD to your source of pain. While ingesting CBD can greatly reduce chronic pain, topical application might prove more immediate and focused with pain.

Most topical CBD products also mix safely with orally ingested CBD. This allows for the possibility of using topical CBD on top of oral CBD drops or edibles when a single ingestible dose is not sufficient for reducing your pain.

Beauty Products

On top of using CBD creams and lotions for pain relief, a number of beauty products utilize the properties of CBD. Many toners, face washes, masks, lotions, and more highlight CBD as a key ingredient. While science of how CBD might enhance skin quality is not comprehensive, CBD provides an undoubtedly rejuvenating sensation to the skin.

Smokable CBD Bud

While smoking hemp is a less popular way of ingesting CBD, you can certainly do so. Just like CBD’s cousin THC present in marijuana, CBD can enter the bloodstream through smoke inhalation. Of course, smoking hemp does not produce the psychoactive effects of marijuana, but the option does provide some benefits.

Ingesting CBD via smoking enacts the effects of CBD far faster than tinctures or foods. This means that smokable CBD can provide pain relief, promote relaxation, and provide a number of other benefits rather quickly.

Smoking CBD is certainly not for everyone. Inhaling smoke is not recommended for anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions. However, it is a viable option for many consumers who want fast-acting effects.

Determining the Best Format for You

If you are deciding which type of CBD product to try out, it is important to ask yourself some questions.

Consider the following questions as a jumping off point:

Why am I taking CBD?

How severe are the issues or conditions that I want to address?

Do I have any allergies to foods, drugs, or other products?

What are my personal preferences?
